GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A Grand Junction organization received an esteemed acclamation Tuesday.

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo., was on hand to present an export achievement certificate to the Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Udall acknowledged the tourism entity for successfully tapping into the international marketplace.

Officials with the bureau say more than 10 percent of the Grand Valley's tourists are international. "The international travel market is really an export industry, which is why the U.S. Department of Commerce has recognized us today. We are finding ways to bring new money into Mesa County and that money is really important at an economic time like this," said Debbie Kovalik, the department director for the bureau.

Officials say for every dollar spent on tourism, the city gets $6 in return. One-third of Mesa County's sales tax comes from international visitors.

Udall says innovation in the tourism industry will be a factor in the state's economic recovery.
