Grand Junction City Council Discusses Budget

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Members of the Grand Junction City Council were hard at work Monday preparing next year's budget.

Council members have entered the final stages of budget development, and are now focusing on the labor and economic portion of the plan.

Several different groups are requesting city funding for projects and events, including Colorado Mesa University and the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.

Officials say in 2009, the city had to scale back, but members expect 2013 to be a "capital intense" year.

“It was really important that at that time we cut out a lot of programs, and those programs really add a lot of function, and they're important to our community for many reasons,” said Laura Luke, mayor pro tem. “So thankfully, we are just sort of starting to see a little bit of recovery, and we aren't wasting any time.”

The city manager hopes to reintegrate capital back into some of the projects.

The council will vote on the budget in December.
