Grand Junction Chamber Holds Candidate Forum

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Colorado candidates battled it out over bagels and coffee Wednesday morning at the Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce's forum.

Candidates from both House District 55 and 54, as well as contestants for County Commissioner District 1 and 3 addressed a packed house.

Members of the audience asked several questions, one of which was about a bill Rep. Ray Scott introduced this year in regard to horse racing in Mesa County.

Scott and his opponent, Dan Robinson, had differing opinions on the topic.

"I'm opposed to that kind of legislation,” said Robinson. “It serves the value of one person only. It avoids the voters' approval of it and it's really not appropriate. It’s what we are trying to get over here; we can't allow this to go on."

"It was a dead bill but we had amended the bill,” said Scott. “Obviously my opponent had no idea of what was really going on and that's the big difference when you have someone who is experienced in the legislature.”

Candidates also answered other questions related to tourism and jobs.

Rep. Scott knows it was in committee and can be brought back to life and his opponent knows very well what was really going on. Now the ground work to upgrade the fairgrounds is being pushed to the surrounding area in prepartion of the special interests of that bill taking it over with just the vote of 2 county commissioners.
