Grand Junction Approves 2013 Budget

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Grand Junction City Council voted unanimously to approve the 2013 budget, which is $8.2 million less than the current budget, totaling $145.8 million.

Many major capital improvement projects wrapped up this year, causing the budget to be able to shrink, and officials say they still tried to budget conservatively.

At Wednesday's council meeting, many council members spoke about how the improving economy was able to free up funds to be spent on areas that have been cut in the past, including the addition of 13 city jobs, some of which will be allotted replace positions that were cut from the police department.

The new budget also allowed the city to invest more money into the community and even doubling the annual amount given to Colorado Mesa University.

"There's historical cooperation between the city and those outside agencies, those community agencies, as well as the county and so those partnerships are very important ... so I think when we move into each budget year, we put those in and very rarely are those partnerships items that have to be cut from the budget," said Jodi Romero, Grand Junction Financial Operations Manager.

2013 Budget Total: $145.8 Million

- Transportation: $9.1 Million
- Water & Sewer Systems: $6.3 Million
- Public Safety: $6.3 Million
- Avalon Theatre Renovation: $4.45 Million
- Parks, Pools & Playgrounds: $2.1 Million
- Colorado Mesa University: $1 Million
- Community Investment: $898,000
- Economic Development Contingency: $520,000

Ah, it's good to see the financial black hole known as the Avalon is still sucking money from the local taxpayers. We are so lucky to have such ethical and honest people in charge of this fine city.
