GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Local businesses were honored Friday for their dedication to giving young people jobs over the summer.

The Governor's Summit Job Hunt is a statewide program that links in-class learning with on-the-job experience.

Students work through the summer and some are hired after the program is complete.

The Mesa County Workforce Center says more than 1,000 students got jobs this summer through the program.

Action Publishing, Inc. in Grand Junction participated for the first time.

Tauna Dean, human resources and finance employee for Action Publishing, Inc., said, "They're graduating from college and they've never had a first-time job, so they needed that kind of handout, or hand-up, to get them started in the workforce."

Sue Tuffin, the director for the Mesa County Workforce Center, said, "This is an opportunity for them not only to have the paycheck that provides them with potentially dollars for school, but it also gives them that career path."

The Governor's Summer Job Hunt has been helping young people find jobs for 32 years.
