GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Seniors in Colorado may qualify for a reduction in their property taxes. The Senior Homestead Property Tax Exemption is available to seniors and their surviving spouses.

Gov. Hickenlooper has signed a bill that funds the exemption this year, which has not been signed since 2008.

Officials say there are more than 180,000 people who could benefit from the exemption statewide. Senior citizens must apply by July 16, 2012.

To qualify for the property tax exemption in 2012, an individual must be at least 65 years old by January 1, 2012, be the owner of record and must have been the owner of record of the property for at least 10 consecutive years. They must also occupy the property as a primary residence.

Mesa County Assessor Barbara Brewer and her staff are hosting a local town hall meeting to discuss issues relating to this tax exemption and to help interested seniors navigate the application process.

The meeting will take place Thursday, June 14, from 3-5 p.m. at the Old Mesa County Courthouse located at 544 Rood Ave. It will be held in the first floor multipurpose room.
