GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Gov. John Hickenlooper was in Grand Junction Monday to sign three bills into law.

HB 1329 combines the public trustee's office with the county treasurer. HB 1045 expands tax exemptions for businesses that use timber killed by spruce beetles. HB 1324 changes the admission standard of Colorado Mesa University.

The governor says HB 1324 gives Colorado Mesa University the same elite status as universities like CU-Boulder and will bring more students to the university.

He also said that being on the Western Slope is important out of respect to local legislators and the community. "They work so hard to get this legislation done and I want to make sure that their community recognizes that we're unique. Republicans and Democrats work together. We passed our budget with 86 out of 100 votes. Unlike Washington, our legislature works," said Hickenlooper.

HB 1324 received unanimous backing, while the other two bills had bipartisan support. The three bills were sponsored by a combination of Rep. Ray Scott, R-District 54, Rep. Laura Bradford, R-District 55, and Sen. Steve King, R-District 7.

Bradford said HB 1045 will make use of excess timber wasting away in our forests. Scott said HB 1329 will save hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
