Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park Doubles Cave Size

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park had a fairly busy winter. They added three new rides, including two roller coasters. However, it's what's below ground that owner Steve Beckley says people will be talking about.

Over the winter Beckley and his team explored the caverns further than anyone has before and found a feasible way to open up some of that space to the public. "We've elected to open up some new sections of cave, make a loop tour which allows us to get more capacity, see more of the cave and actually expand the experience for people. You'll be able to see more formations, a lot more cool rooms that haven't been opened before."

The cave has many features formed from calcite water. The water evaporates, but leaves the calcite behind, effectively helping to build mineral formations.

The expansion has totaled 1,400 feet in the upper level, which will increase the amount of people able to take a tour from 84 to over 200 an hour.

Work has stopped for the summer. However, Beckley says this winter, crews will go back into the expanded areas to add lighting and stairways.

The new section is expected to open on May 1, 2013, and cost about $250,000.
