Girls on the Run Tie-Up Their Laces for Annual 5k
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. More than 1,500 young girls and their families packed Long Family Memorial Park on Saturday for the annual Girls on the Run 5k. The participating ladies came from all over the Western Slope, including Mesa, Delta, Montrose and Garfield County. Young girls from Grand County, Utah also participated. Prior to Saturday's run, the girls participated in a 10-week after school program aimed at helping them become strong and self-confident young women. Coaches teach life lessons, using the power of running to help prepare girls for their future. Jill Henwood, executive director of Girls on the Run, said, "If we can get girls to believe that they are wonderful just the way they are and they can have a positive impact on their world, if we can get them starting to believe that early and acting in that way early it's going to become a habit. We like to see a world where all girls realize they can be positive, that they're wonderful." The girls trained together in preparation for the 5k, with the help of more than 400 volunteer women coaches. Girls on the Run is always looking for more volunteers.
