DENVER (AP) - The Denver Zoo has a new addition.

A gerenuk has been born at the zoo, a first for the Denver facility.

The Denver Post reports (http://tinyurl.com/acs7jyq ) the animal was born several weeks ago and the birth was announced Thursday.

A gerenuk is a small antelope from semiarid areas of eastern Africa. The name means giraffe-necked in the Somali language. Adults are 3 feet tall at the shoulder with long, thin necks.

The animals stand on their hind legs to reach food from tree limbs.
