Gas Prices on the Rise Once Again

by KREX News Room
by Taylor Kanost

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- In just a month's time, prices at the pump in Grand Junction have risen over seventy cents.

This comes after January gas prices in Colorado dropped to $2.79/gallon, the lowest state average since 2010.

According to officials at AAA, a low supply of gas and oil is the main cause for the drastic increase in costs.

Supply typically runs low around this time of year because oil refineries are in the process of switching from producing winter blend to summer blend gasoline.

Refineries require down time during this change-over, and therefore can't produce the same amount of gasoline as they normally do.

Officials believe that gas prices will continue to climb until Colorado refineries complete the switch to summer blend.

Grand Junction stations averaged $2.89/gallon on January 27th, and have since skyrocketed to an average of $3.63/gallon.

Today, the state of Colorado averages $3.59 per gallon.

Despite the rapid increase, Colorado still holds the 6th cheapest prices in the country.

Wyoming currently has the cheapest gas prices in the country at $3.24 per gallon, while California currently charges the most in the continental U.S. at $4.24 per gallon.
