Garfield County Commissioners Approve Fireworks Ban
KREX News Room
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP)- Garfield County commissioners have approved a ban on using or selling fireworks in unincorporated parts of the county this year, with a possible exception for the weeks leading up to the July 4 holiday.
All three commissioners voted for the ordinance after hearing fire officials speak about the high threat for wildfires this summer.
Below average snowpack, severe drought, and forecasted dry conditions throughout this are a few of the reasons mentioned in the ordinance.
The ordinance prohibits the use and sale of fireworks, except for the period between May 31 and July 5, unless the fire danger is found to be high. Commissioners plan to reassess the fire danger later this month to determine whether to keep the exception.
Fines for violating the ordinance could be as high as $1,000.
