GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Over the last weekend the Grand Junction Police Department gave out more than 50 minor in possession of alcohol summonses.

On Saturday night officers issued 35 in one stop, which included giving citations to three 15-year-olds.

The Enforcing Underage Drinking Law grant made it possible for police to beef up their enforcement.

"This year we were in partnership with the city attorney office and city courts to allow to pay for some liquor classes and things for the kids if they've got MIPs ... in addition to that it allows us to pay for overtime to get more officers on the street to help combat underage drinking," said Sgt. Stan Ancell of the Grand Junction Police Department.

The grant gives the selected agency $40,000 to help with the cause.

Authorities say they want to not only keep minors safe, but also cut down on the number of drunk drivers on the road.
