Fruita Replaces Fireworks with Concert

FRUITA, Colo.- Fruita has become the latest city to cancel its Fourth of July fireworks display.

The fireworks show was scheduled to take place this week, but has been suspended due to exceptionally dry conditions in the area.

City officials say public safety is the top priority for the Western Slope city, and they consulted with the BLM, Mesa County Sheriff's Office and the Lower Valley Fire District prior to making the decision.

“We also set the example, if they see a big city canceling fireworks, they are probably going to see how important it is to abstain from using fireworks themselves,” said Kelley Griffin, special events supervisor for Fruita.

In order to keep the Independence Day tradition alive, the city will host a concert Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Pavilion in downtown Fruita to replace the fireworks show.

The show is free to the public and will feature Ralph Dinosaur and the Fabulous Volcanoes.
