Fruita Officials Look into Future Tabor Limits

FRUITA, Colo.- When Fruita voters approved the extension of the Taxpayer Bill of Rights limits in 2006, they agreed that any tax revenue that was collected over the TABOR limit could be spent; that helped with the construction of many capital improvement projects like the Fruita Community Center.

In 2013 Fruita will start a new six-year plan to continue working with the same revenue levels.

Fruita officials say in the last six years there have been several major capital improvements made from the extra revenue, which is what was promised to voters.

As they look forward there may be challenges in upholding the promised capital improvement funds for the next six years.

"We don't see any big significant projects like we have had in the last six years, and that's going to be something we'll have to continually monitor and take a look at as we go through this process," said Margaret Steelman, finance director for the city of Fruita.

If the city is not able to meet the revenue limit, voters could challenge the TABOR exception during an election season.

They could also face a challenge if there's an economic downturn; there's the possibility of having to pull money from other city services to try to create the revenue voters agreed to.
