GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.
On Thursday evening Grand Valley community members were invited to hear from District 51 School Board candidates, the last forum before ballots reach voters.
The public forum was hosted by Freedom! Colorado. The organization, along with the public, asked a variety of questions. One topic they discussed was Amendment 66, which Freedom! Colorado opposes. The proposed tax increase aims to fund Colorado schools. All board candidates voiced their opposition for the amendment.
Candidates were also asked how they plan to improve some dismal ratings in terms of math and reading proficiency.
"Fifty percent of the students that go into Colorado Mesa University have to take remedial courses in reading or math, that's unacceptable. We think new ideas and new approaches need to be taken in the school district," said Kevin McCarney, chairman of Freedom! Colorado.
McCarney says that anyone who missed Thursday's forum can watch it on either their website or Facebook page.
