Foster Care Awareness Month
KREX News Room
MESA COUNTY, Colo. At any given time there are about 250 children in the care of the Mesa County Department of Human Services, due to abuse and neglect.
On Friday a fundraiser was held at Yogo Mojo to raise funds and awareness. The shop will donate 10 percent of the day's profit to the Mesa County Foster Care Program.
Supporting foster homes gives abused and neglected children a safe place to reside until they can return home.
Chad Kaneakua, placement resource manager, said, "From what I've seen the thing foster parents say they get the most out of it is their reward of knowing they're helping children have a better life, a more fulfilling life and a healthy life. But tandem to that is also the reward of helping children back to their parents."
Mesa County Commissioners have proclaimed May 2013 as Foster/Kinship Appreciation Month.
Friday's fundraiser was from 12 until 10:30 p.m. They are located at 950 North Ave.
An open house will be held on May 29 at Johnny Carino's Restaurant from 6-7:30 p.m. They are located at 2480 Highway 6&50.
