GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A gymnastics coach previously employed here in Grand Junction is facing sexual assault charges on two underage kids on the Front Range.
According to a Broomfield County District Attorney, Robert Edward Barke allegedly sexually assaulted two juvenile males from October of 2004 to June of 2007, while he was their coach at Xtreme Altitude Gymnastics in Broomfield.
Barke used to work at KidzPlex in Grand Junction before he moved to Broomfield.
One of the co-owners tells NewsChannel 5 that nothing like this happened while Barke was employed at KidzPlex for more than a year.
“I was just totally shocked and blindsided by this,” said Brian Bensley, co-owner and president of KidzPlex. “Unfortunately, it does happen. We do everything we can with our policies and procedures and background checks to make sure nothing like this happens and I want to make clear that it didn't happen at KidzPlex.”
Barke is being charged on a number of things, such as sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust.
He is out on a $100,000 bond, and is due back for arraignment on June 20th.
