Food Storage Order Issued for Upper Roaring Fork Valley

by Meaghan Wallace

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.- Campers in the Upper Roaring Fork Valley now need to be more cautious about where they're keeping their food.

White River National Forest officials say the extreme drought conditions are causing an increase in bear activity.

In an effort to keep both humans and bears safe, a food storage order is now in place in all developed recreation sites on the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District.

Visitors must now store their food, cooking equipment, utensils and coolers in a bear resistant container such as a locked car or a bear box.

Even products like soap, toothpaste and cooking oil can attract bears, so officials say it's important to make sure to store it all in a safe place.

Violating the food storage order can result in a fine of up to $5,000.

"Violating the food storage order can result in a fine of up to $5,000" How about just shoot the idiots who violate the order instead of shooting the bears?
