PALISADE, Colo.- The Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies allocates food to around 120 agencies, and distributes around five million pounds of food per year. This weekend they are moving into a bigger building to help assist with the high demand.

After a year of planning two semi's hauled 16 loads of food Friday to the new location.

"This is just an exciting time, and we've needed to do this for a long time," said Tony Alexis, vice president of distribution and procurement.

The new warehouse is located in Palisade at 120 N. River Rd and it's more than double the size of the previous building.

"I think the demand is there, there's a lot more need right now," said Alexis.

Five million pounds of food is distributed each year.

The organization says they'll have more room to start new programs to help out the community.

"It will gives us flexibility to do a few more projects. We have a lot bigger refrigeration so hopefully we'll be able to get the orchards to try to get more produce available to our clients. We'll also have a project in dehydrating food," said Alexis.

They'll be installing three new commercial grade food dehydrators.

"Drying fruits and possibly vegetables, so we can pass that on to our agencies," said Betty Heath.

They say the location of the building in Palisade is more convenient and is better suited for their clients.

They plan to have the new building open and running by Monday, Jan. 7.

The move to Palisades poses a hardship to the 'Agape Food Basket' in Fruita and quite possibly removes this 'client' from the list.
