Protecting Your Water Pipes During the First Freeze
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Mesa County's first freeze of the Fall season is expected on Friday night, which means residents should start thinking about preparing to winterize their water pipes. Experts advise home owners to take normal winter precautions for October. They say the main issue you should consider now are exposed pipes around your home. "The exposed pipes are full of water, and the fear is that if it freezes solid it will expand and your pipes will break,” says Assistant General Manager at Ute Water Conservancy District Steve Ryken. Other general precautions they recommend are turning off power to your swamp cooler, disconnecting outside hose bibs, keeping your garage door closed, making sure motor home skirting is intact, and to begin thinking about disconnecting and draining your sprinkler system. If your pipes do freeze, you should call Ute Water, or a plumbing and heating company immediately.
