GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Grand Junction Fire Department is training with a new foam that will help put out fires faster, and prevent them from spreading.

The Compressed Air Foam System also helps conserve property from damage and lowers the surrounding temperature.

"It's just another option. It's another tool box in a tool kit to use, depending on the situation," said Mike Gazdak, training officer with the Grand Junction Fire Department.

The air foam is new to the fire department and is made up of biodegradable foam, water and air.

"We can even use it on car fires, weed fires, or haystack fires," said Gazdak.

The foam can also pretreat buildings to help protect them from catching on fire.

"If we have a large fire, a large building on fire, and we want to protect the building that's next to it, we can apply this foam onto it and it will help keep the fire from attacking the building as quickly; it's going to help," said Gazdak.

The fire department has installed the system into two trucks thus far. If all goes well, they hope to place the air foam in all the firetrucks.
