GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Local firefighters are "filling their boots" to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and they want the community to join them.

Fire departments around the region began their efforts Friday and will continue through Monday.

They are gathering donations at City Market, Maverik and Wal-Mart.

The money raised by the firefighters will stay in Colorado.

A local boy named Shane, who is suffering from the disease, joined firefighters at City Market Saturday as they gathered donations. The money will help him attend camp.

His grandmother, Danna Michaels, said, "He gets to ride horses, and they have a zip line, a climbing wall and it's five days. And it's a place where they can be pretty independent."

Derek Trombetta, a Grand Junction firefighter and coordinator of the event, said, "One thing that's really nice is that 100 percent of the proceeds actually stay in Colorado, and 77 percent of those actually stay in Western Colorado."

The fundraiser supports over 200 million families dealing with muscular dystrophy.

Firefighters have been "filling the boot" since 1954.
