GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- A fire broke out in the elevator room of a Grand Junction retirement home on Friday, causing quite a predicament for residents inside.

Grand Junction fire officials responded to reports of smoke around 7:30 a.m. at Grand Villa Assisted Living located at 1501 Patterson Road.

According to fire officials, the small fire sparked up in the electrical box inside the building's elevator room.

At the time, no residents or staff were inside the elevator.

Officials got the situation under control quickly.

“All the residents were sent to secured areas immediately after smoke had been dedicated,” said Rebecca Gray, executive director of Grand Villa.

“They were able to account for all the residents inside,” said John Williams of the Grand Junction Fire Department. “They did not have to evacuate the building.”

Fire officials say a fire like this one is not a common occurrence.

Officials from the retirement home tell NewsChannel 5 they don't know when the elevator will be back in service.

However, all residents who live on the second floor are able to use the stairs and will receive assistance from staff.
