Federal Trade Commission Offers Tips to Avoid Donation Scams

DENVER- The Federal Trade Commission is making sure anyone who wants to help the Aurora shooting victims knows how to donate their money safely.

The Aurora Victim Relief Fund has been established by Gov. John Hickenlooper and the Community First Foundation to provide immediate and long-term support to the shooting victims and their families.

Donations can be accepted directly through GivingFirst.org. click here.

Organizers want to be very clear that this is the main way to donate, because there have been multiple impostors trying to collect donations as well.

The FTC has created a checklist with tips on how to donate wisely: ask for the name of the charity and verify its authenticity, ask what percentage of the donation goes to the cause, don't give credit card information unless the charity is legitimate, ask for a receipt that shows the amount contributed and that it is tax deductible and avoid giving cash gifts because they are harder to track.
