Federal Regulators Warn Farmers Following Cantaloupe Contamination

by KREX News Room
by Jordan Sherman

DENVER- Federal regulators are offering to help state inspectors following cantaloupe recalls because of illness the last two years.

The help offer comes with a stern warning to cantaloupe farmers as regulators will be testing the fruit after a listeria outbreak killed 33 people in 2011.

Another outbreak, last year, was traced to salmonella at an Indiana cantaloupe packer.

The Denver Post reports the Food and Drug Administration does not routinely target an industry for scrutiny, and inspectors usually check smaller farms or food packers once every few years.
