GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.
On Monday, Oct. 14, the annual Fall Leaf Pick Up Program will begin. Post cards were mailed to City residents the week of Sept. 30. Printed on the back of these post cards are the four rake-out dates scheduled for each household's pick up area.
There is no need to sign up for this program. Residents who choose to participate should have leaves piled in front of their house, on the street, 18 inches away from the curb (allowing water to flow down gutter) or directly on the pavement (if no curb and gutter). Leaves need to be on the street by 7 a.m. of the scheduled rake-out date for their area. Leaves should be picked up on that date or by the end of the next business day. In case of weather or equipment delays, crews will return on the next scheduled rake-out date for that area.
For more detailed information, please look for the Leaf Removal Program link on the City of Grand Junction website at www.gjcity.org
. The link is under the City Spotlight section.
The Leaf Removal Hotline at (970) 256-4111 will also provide daily updates on any schedule changes due to weather delays or equipment problems.
For residents who prefer to bag their leaves, there will be several dates to bring bagged leaves to the City Municipal Services Center, located at 333 West Avenue.
The drop-off site will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 16, Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. Folks must be prepared to empty their own bags.
Leaves will not be picked up on Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11), Thanksgiving Day or the day after (Nov. 28 & 29).
The purpose of this program is to eliminate excess leaf build-up along City streets that causes storm water drains to clog. These efforts help prevent flooding and reduce negative impacts affecting our water quality. Leaves collected during this program are recycled and turned into compost.
The Mesa County Landfill Organic Material Compost Facility at 3071 Highway 50 also accepts bagged leaves, tree limbs, grass clippings, pallets and untreated lumber year round and free of charge. Their hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
