Advances in Dentistry May Help Migraine Sufferers

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- More than 36 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, and officials say your dentist may be able to help.

In an effort to bring attention to the problem, the National Headache Foundation had designated June as National Migraine Awareness Month.

Experts say 95 percent of migraines have a dental component as part of the cause, and now advances in dentistry can reveal certain imbalances in peoples' mouths that may cause the headaches.

"We can tell how your teeth meet within a hundredth of a second, which teeth meet first, which teeth meet hardest, whether your balance is left or right, so it's very important because all that information goes into the brain headache center and helps produce the headache," explained Dr. Gary Andreoletti, a migraine therapy practitioner.

Studies show that migraines affect 1 in 4 U.S. households. These headaches cause 90 percent of those who suffer from them to miss work, school or social functions.

The Migraine Research Foundation says across the country, employees lose more than $13 billion each year as the result of those who miss work due to headaches.
