Expansion Plans Underway for Powderhorn Mt. Resort

MESA, Colo. This summer Powderhorn Mountain Resort officials started work on their Master Development Plan (MDP), which entails plans for future growth. On Friday Rep. Scott Tipton made his way to the resort, getting a look at what is in store for Powderhorn.
While they don’t plan on losing their small-town feel, expansion is on the horizon for the mountain resort.
“We’re looking at a long term plan of the next one to five years and how we can accomplish some of those opportunities," said general manager Daren Cole.
Their MDP tackles necessary improvements.
“Whether it’s a new lift on the mountain, to get people around the mountain quicker, whether it’s expanded snowmaking, so we can open earlier and stay open later, enhancements to our base area," said Cole. They are also looking to add bike lifts.
“I grew up here on the West Slope. To be able to see this open back up and see the improvements that are being made, that’s job creation which is critically important for our area,” said Rep. Tipton.
There’s also plans in the works to make Powderhorn a year-round destination.
Cole said, “For summertime we’ll be looking at hiking trails, biking trails, zip-lines, mountain coasters.”
“It just affords us part of the reason why so many of us live here, great outdoor opportunity," said Tipton.
The congressman also stopped by to discuss his plans for protecting one of the resort’s most crucial resources, “I’m going to be dropping legislation this month, in September, to be able to codify western water rights from federal preemption. If the federal government needs water they need to play by the same rules as the rest of us.”
“As we expand our snowmaking opportunities, water rights are always a key component of that," said Cole.
Resort officials look forward to working with local representatives like Tipton, and are hopeful for major growth in store for the future.
Resort officials say they plan on completing the master development plan in December or January.
