Plans for Expanded Tunnel on Interstate 70 Moves Forward

by KREX News Room

DENVER(AP)-The project to add an extra lane eastbound on Interstate 70 through the Twin Tunnels near Idaho Springs is expected to get started next year.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says it will reroute traffic along a frontage road and get it done in six months rather than waiting until traffic is slower.

According to KCNC-TV, transportation officials say it would cost less to work 24 hours a day to get the project done sooner rather than just working a shift and drawing it out for multiple years.

The state is trying to relieve traffic backups that can last for hours on weekends and holidays.
