ORCHARD MESA, Colo.- An Orchard Mesa resident is lucky to be alive, after his house catches fire Friday morning.

Emergency responders rushed to 241 1/2 Beaver St., and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.

The homeowner had called dispatchers shortly after 6 a.m. but it wasn't until an hour later that firefighters finally had the blaze suppressed.

They call it a "defensive fire,” which means they fought it from the outside, in.

At last report, firefighters were still in the mop-up phase.

Authorities describe the home as a total loss.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
