FRUITA, Colo.- The New Year started with a bang for a Fruita resident, but not the kind he'd prefer.

According to authorities, just after 3 a.m. on Tuesday, a driver heading along 19 Rd struck an electric pole right by Skiff Rd. The unknown driver then fled the scene right after.

NewsChannel 5 spoke with the owner of the home that sits right in front of the scene. He believes the driver of the car was drunk when he caused the crash.

“I went outside the door and I heard somebody was stuck outside here in front of my house,” said Humberto Anchondo, home owner who called 911. “By the time I dressed up, the guy hit the post and he took off down 19 Road.”

Anchondo says 19 Rd tends to be very busy and residents are constantly speeding down the street.

He says before authorities arrived on scene, he saw many cars almost strike the broken pole because it wasn't visible in the dark.
