DENVER- According to published reports, a psychiatrist who was treating suspected Aurora shooting gunman James Holmes had asked University of Colorado police for a background check on the man six weeks before the shootings.

Dr. Lynne Fenton reportedly called university police about the background check on the former graduate student in early June, but did not ask that Holmes be taken to a hospital for evaluation and observation.

Attorneys for the psychiatrist did not immediately comment on the report.

Holmes is charged with killing 12 people and injuring 58 in the July 20 shooting that took place during a midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" at a Century 16 theater in Aurora.
