Disc Golfers Give Back to the Community

PALISADE, Colo. On Saturday, disc golf athletes brought their putters and drivers to Riverbend Park, for some competition and a good cause. The Grand Valley Disc Club's annual Ice Bowl benefits various community organizations, all aimed at feeding the hungry.

At this competition, athletes gave back to the communities that let them play in their backyards.

"I put on my disks 'GIB', everybody thinks my name is Gib. Well it means 'give it back'," said Bill Alderman, a Grand Valley Disc Club board member.

Rock Cesario, president of the Grand Valley Disk Golf Club, said, "There's money going for the Child and Migrant Services in Palisade, the Catholic Outreach food kitchen in Grand Junction and Agape Food Bank in Fruita. We're spreading it out because we have disk golf courses in a ll three of those towns."

For one individual, giving back to the community was personnel.

"We have a local guy here in town that actually happened to be a migrant worker when he came here 40 years ago. And he decided that it was his chance to give back to the community. So what he did was he went out and found this truck, bought it and donated it," said Alderman.

His gift will help countless people.

Alderman said, "They help those migrant workers eat, help them out with rides, different things like that."

Ice Bowl's take place throughout the nation during the winter months.

Cesario said, "The money has to go to feed hungry people or you really can't call it an Ice Bowl. This little community comes in the top 15 or the top 10 almost every year."

"It's what we do. As far as disc golfers go, it's our little way of paying back to our community," said Alderman.

Disc golfers say they are happy to give back in any way they can plan to continue making the community a better place.

Folks can help Grand Valley disc golfers in their quest to feed the hungry. They can donate through Triple Play Records or at any three of the organizations mentioned in the name of Grand Valley Disc Golf Club.
