Demand For Local Meat Rises

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Local farmers and ranchers are trying to produce and market meat locally but say the U.S. Department of Agriculture is restricting them.

Local farmers, ranchers, a USDA representative, and various meat processors met at the Delta-Montrose Technical College Wednesday night to discuss how to go about marketing meat locally.

The Colorado Department of Agriculture has received an increased amount of inquiry from ranchers and consumers who are asking for fresh, local meat and think it's a need here in Colorado.

They discussed how they could implement more USDA approved slaughter houses locally, so the cows don't have to be transferred as far. The group discussed how it would cut transportation costs, time, and make the local rancher more profitable.

"I think it would make it easier for local producers to sell in local markets. It would help lower that barrier of time and cost and transportation for them to be able to do that," said Ron Carleton, deputy commission with the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

Officials with the Colorado Department of Agriculture hope to travel to Durango and Craig next to hear from more ranchers and farmers.

Come on Courtney, how is the USDA restricting the local marketing of beef? You placed that accusation in your opening paragragh but don't explain it.
