Delta County Commissioners Reaffirm Approval of Egg-Laying Farms

by KREX News Room
by Christina Marrazza

DELTA COUNTY, Colo.- Commissioners have reaffirmed their approval of two egg-laying operations that were once challenged by residents.

The commissioners had to reanalyze their decision after a judge found an "abuse of discretion'' in their original approvals of the 15,000-hen, cage-free farms.

The judge had said commissioners should pay attention to whether the operations are compatible with the neighborhood and whether nearby property values would be hurt.

The commissioners first said no definitive conclusion could be made based on the evidence presented.

However, on Tuesday commissioners said nine inspections helped prove the egg-laying operations could stay.

I just moved here! And I don't regret it because this is truly the land of the free. I know you may not like what your neighbor has in their yard. But for a country that says you have freedom to do what you want it has always been limited. You do what you have to do to make a living. At least here in Delta there is more freedom than I could ever imagine.

Northforkflyer is wrong, the dust and feathers from the egg farm blow over the neighbor's property. Talk to the realators, no one is even looking at property there. Anonymous is also wrong, the neighbors are older families that have been there for generations - now their health is endangered, and their property is devalued.

This is a case of irresponsible local government following the path of no zoning, no regulations and a bogus interpretation of "Right to Farm Law" pushed by the local anti-government local interest groups. I feel sorry for the neighbors in this small acreage residential area who have to endure an industrial operation in the midst of their homes. The shame of it is that there are numerous sites in local industrial areas or unoccupied areas where this could have been sited, but the Hostelleters decided to dump it in this inappropriate area. The court agreed with the neighbors, but the county commissioners will not capitulate to reason and logic. Time to vote them out of office.

This is a verry clean and efficient operation, The technology is 30 years ahead of any other egg operation in the county. 15,000 hens verses 150,000 to 500,000 in most other operations in the county. Land values around other egg operations in the county no more depressed than any other area. $300,000 houses have been built all around farr larger egg operations in the Grand VALLEY. Sour Grapes that opposition cant dictate use of property they don't own.

To bad folks won't be looking to move to this area anytime soon now! Property values in the town of Hotchkiss will plummet even more than they already have! Nice work commissioners, looks like the whole County now has egg on their face and chicken sh*t in their air!
