Delta Considers Allowing Explosive Storage in City Limits

DELTA, Colo. - On Tuesday night the city of Delta discussed whether or not to allow explosives to be stored within city limits.

Delta received a request from a business owner who had a need for storing explosives. The owner requested that the council reconsider its current zoning, which, along with Grand Junction and Montrose, outlaws any explosives within city limits.

The owner would like to keep business in the city, which would also keep revenue there.

The ordinance would add explosives and other non-fuel hazardous materials as a conditional use in the B3 and I zones of Delta.

The discussion even prompted a comment from a resident in attendance, another business owner that would benefit from allowing explosives in city limits.

Greg Turner is in the business of tactical canine training, which requires work with explosives.

"But if we don't have the capability to train them here, I have to contract that out to another company out of state ... and that could [cause a loss of] revenue for the city of Delta as well as profit for me as an owner of a company here," explained Turner, the chief of operations for Leadville Tactical K9.

Turner told the council that both the city and state loses out on about $30,000 a year in his income tax because of the major pay cut he takes by contracting the explosive work out of the area.

After a work session on the issue, the city council held its first reading for the ordinance. Most council members agreed to a second reading except for Robert Jurca, who expressed concern that the ordinance's conditions were not narrow enough.

Delta City Council will next meet on Jan. 1, 2013 to revisit the ordinance.

This headline should read "Delta City Council Considers Being Even More Irresponsible Than They Already Are", or, "Delta City Council Considers Selling Citizen Safety Out For Potential Tax Income Of $30,000.00". Lame excuse for leadership in this City.

No explosives in the city of Delta. This is an absolutely crazy request to make of our small city. Store your explosives elsewhere, and allow at the very least medical marijuana and hemp cultivation in Delta. Stop encouraging the street sale of drugs in our community. Do your job and bust the scum that feed hard drugs to the weak in our area, or is someone getting paid to turn a blind eye? By the way, you might want to learn to spell before you post another comment, if you want people to take your ridiculous statements seriously.

Hey Chief, 37,000 is pennies in tax to the city! Just what the hell is Delta doing? They hate pot and want nothing to do with giving new small businesses a chance to thrive i.e. cannabis shops, tourists, Hemp cultivation! But they will let you store explosives? To hell with that, Delta whined about the safety of children over marijuana but it's ok to have a bomb dump? Mayor Sission is out of his mind and so are the rest of the city council! Why make Delta a target for crazies to get their hands on explosives, whom ever thought this up is a fool! No Pot but bombs, good god Delta, you have lost it. I think a better place would be a National Guard Armory that has the capability to store that kind of thing.
