Dead Fish Popping Up, Typical For Time Of Year

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Around one hundred fish are dead inside a pond at Canyon View Park.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials examined the fish and say the kinda vary from Largemouth Bass, Green Sunfish, Bluegill and several different species of suckers.

Officials say dead fish this time of year isn't unusual due to weather changes.

"From what we can determine it looks like these fish are exhibiting signs of oxygen deprivation. Their gills are flared, their mouths are open, and with the changes in the recent weather patterns,
it's probably tied back to the weather in some relationship," said Lori Martin, an aquatic biologist with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife normally don't respond to parks that are run by the city, but because it was involving wildlife they did want to investigate. They say if you come across dead fish in a pond, lake, or river, contact them so they can be aware of the issue and decided if they need to investigate or not.
