Mesa County Commissioners Approve Contract for New Workforce Center

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Mesa County Commissioners approved a contract to construct a brand new Workforce Center on county property off of 29 1/2 Road.

The contract was awarded to FCI Contractors and will cost the county $7.5 million to build.

Mesa county officials say they looked at redeveloping existing properties in the county but realized, it would be fiscally irresponsible for them to do so.

"We would have had to invest a significant amount of money in renovating lease space, which wouldn't have made much sense financially," said Sue Tuffin, Director for the Mesa County Workforce Center.

Officials say the new building will save the county around $41,000 in money they would have otherwise spent on a lease.

Other than a brand new facility, officials say the new building will have a brand new business center, which will better serve employers and potential employees.

"Employers here in the valley who are seeking qualified workers will have a place to hold their job fairs and their large events," said Director for Mesa County Regional Services Donna Ross.

Tuffin tells NewsChannel Five the groundbreaking for the new building is scheduled for next March while the targeted move in date is centered around mid December of next year also.
