Control Burn Spreads to Clifton Home

CLIFTON, Colo.- Officials are continuing to warn of the dangers of burning this season, as one Clifton resident learned his lesson the hard way on Thursday.

Around 12:15 Thursday afternoon, Clifton Fire Department responded to 450 ½ Mesa Lakes Road in Clifton for reports of smoke coming from underneath the house.

When officials arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the home's crawl space.

They say the fire was caused by a flare up from the weeds the homeowner was burning.

Authorities say he did have a permit and notified the fire department earlier today that he planned to burn. However, he must have walked away from the blaze too soon, causing it to spread to his home.

“When you are done, you still need to pay attention to it,” said Greg Martin, of the Clifton Fire Department. “You still need to make sure it’s out and stay with it for a good 15 to 30 minutes just to make sure everything is out. When you feel comfortable you can walk away from it. So this does send a message to the public that you need to vigilant of your burning.”

Fire officials say there is thousands of dollars in damage done to the home and the home's crawl space is a complete loss.
