Community Receives Free Mental Health Education

MESA COUNTY, Colo. One organization is dedicated to building better lives for those affected by mental illness. On Saturday, the entire community was invited to learn more about the help that's available in Mesa County.

NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, hosted the event No More Secrets. Various speakers discussed the importance of talking about mental health issues. They say that focusing on mental health education is the first step to suicide prevention.

NAMI wants individuals and family to know they are here to help.

Leslie Kent, president of NAMI Western Slope, said, "It's very freeing for a family member, it brings understanding, it brings empathy, for them to realize that, you know, their loved one is dealing with something going on in their brain."

NAMI officials say they will be holding this free event quarterly.

They also have a Family-to-Family course starting on April 6. It strives to help families cope with the realities of serious mental illness.

Just another charade to cloak the real cause of the excessive rate of suicides in this valley. No mention of the lack of jobs or the drag of the excessive taxation of the local and state government. A charade, nothing more.
