DENVER - A new assessment shows that Colorado students are excelling above the national average in vocabulary tests.

The results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress tested representative samples of fourth and eighth grade students in vocabulary and reading.

Colorado eighth graders beat the national average in vocabulary by seven points, with a score of 270.

Colorado fourth graders also outscored the national average by five points with a score of 222.

NAEP officials say a strong vocabulary is essential to improving overall reading skills.
