Colorado Parks and Wildlife Seeks Public Input on Bear Management

MESA COUNTY Colo.- Officials want the public's input when it comes to managing the bear population in Mesa County.

On Monday Colorado Parks and Wildlife held an open forum to discuss bear populations on the Grand Mesa.

Officials say there are 16,000 to 18,000 black bears in the state of Colorado and it's important to keep trends stable when it comes to mortality rates.

Mike Porras, a spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said the department wants to emphasize that wildlife belongs to the public. "Some members of the public may want more bears, others may want less bears ... until we hear from the public, we cannot finalize those plans."

Those who would like to contribute to the discussion can head to the Colorado Parks and Wildlife website at wildlife.state.co.us and take the online survey.

I am a member of the public. Where can I pick up my bear? After all, wildlife belongs to the public and a bearskin rug would look darn nice in my living room.
