DENVER- Colorado ranks first in the nation for mothers who exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months of their lives.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a nationwide breastfeeding report card shows more than one in four Colorado infants received only breast milk during those formative months.

Doctors say breastfeeding is one of the best protections against childhood obesity, infections and asthma.

While Colorado is the leanest state in the nation for adults, the state ranks 29 in childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity is considered to be one of Colorado's 10 winnable battles, and health officials say breastfeeding helps regulate the hormone that affects a child's appetite and body fat.
