Colo. Lawmaker Proposes Bill Making Insanity Defense More Difficult

by KREX News Room
by Jordan Sherman

DENVER- Republican lawmaker Frank McNulty is sponsoring a bill that would make it harder for defense attorneys to prove their clients are not guilty by reason of insanity.

The proposal seeks to address high profile cases where an insanity defense case is expected.

One of those cases involves Aurora theater shooting suspect James Holmes whose attorney's have said he's mentally ill.

Under the current system, prosecutors are able to prove defendants are sane.

The bill is up for its first vote in a House committee today.

The insanity defense is so over used, and used in cases where it's inapporiate. This law sounds reasonable.
