Colo. School Funding Overhaul Up for Vote

DENVER (AP) - A monster overhaul of Colorado's school-funding process faces its first test in the Colorado Legislature.

The sweeping proposal to rewrite public school financing was due for a vote Wednesday in the Senate Education Committee. The panel met late into the night Tuesday to pore through the biggest and most complicated bill of the 2013 session.

The bill aims to repair Colorado's complex formula for funding public K-12 education. Most of the changes rely on voters approving a higher tax this fall, likely an income tax hike that hasn't yet been proposed.

Colorado's school-funding regulations have prompted widespread complaints that education is poorly funded and too susceptible to cuts when the economy sours.
