GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- School for thousands of public school students across the country and here in Colorado is about to get a little longer.

Starting in 2013, Colorado and four other states plan to add at least 300 extra hours of learning time.

The three-year pilot program will affect almost 20,000 students in 40 schools.

Schools districts plan to work with parents and teachers to decide whether to make the school day longer, add more days to the school year, or both.

The initiative is intended to boost student achievement and make U.S. schools more competitive on a global level.

Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York and Tennessee are the other four schools that will add the extra hours.
