GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.(AP)- A measure granting gay couples moves closer to a reality.

The House Judiciary Committee voted 8-3 to pass the Colorado Civil Union Act Thursday.

According to the Denver Post, Republican lawmaker Carole Murray joined seven Democrats in support of the bill, saying it was the right thing to do.

The bill now moves to the House Finance Committee.

The measure being considered grants same-sex couples rights similar to marriage.

House Republicans have defeated the bill the previous two years, but it Is expected to become law this year, because Democrats supporting the proposal control the Legislature, and Governor John Hickenlooper is expected to sign it.

About a dozen states already allow either civil unions, or gay marriage.
