Coal Mine Detects CO, Sends Workers Home

SOMERSET, Colo. - A Somerset Coal Mine sends hundreds of workers home after detecting carbon monoxide in part of the mine.

The Elk Creek mine evacuated 300 employees on Wednesday after dangerously-high levels of CO were detected in a small section of the mine.

Oxbow Mining president Jim Cooper says that miner's safety is the company's first concern.

He added that safety officials, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, are working as quickly as possible to draft a plan to properly ventilate the poisonous gas.

However, there is no word yet on when the mine will again be fully operational.
