City Looking Into CNG Truck Options

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Grand Junction City Staff is pushing for more environmentally friendly options while upgrading utility trucks.

Officials will be presenting their plan to City Council Wednesday night to buy two dump trucks that would be equipped with compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, totaling $349,770.

"For every cent increase in fuel it costs the fleet division about $3,000. So when you're talking about 70 percent savings over the cost of diesel, those dollars add up pretty quickly," said Jay Valentine, Internal Services Manager.

Funds to pay for the diesel option on both trucks have already been budgeted for and officials say the money for the CNG option will be recaptured through user charges in future years.

$174,885 for a Dump Truck? That seems a little steep to me. I would bet you could get a sutible truck for a lot less than that. I bet $100,000 would get a very good truck, fully equipped with a Dump Body, and a Snow Plow set up, They don't need to get a Kenworth or Peterbuilt. If a Mack or International will work for a Consturction Company, then they will work just fine for the City of Grand Junction. It never ceases to amaze me how hey can figure out how to spend OUR money, and they have the nerve to ask us to extend TABOR. Give us a break.
